Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen
The Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) was formed on 20 April 1950 in Kerala, south India, under the leadership of the scholars of the Salafi Movement in Kerala. KNM is not the first organizational setup of the Islahi Movement in Kerala; that was Kerala Muslim Aikhya Sangham (Organization for Muslim Unity in Kerala). Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulema (KJU), a body also composed of scholars, was established in 1924, and is still actively functioning. KNM was formed as a common platform for the tens of hundreds of common Islahi workers (those who follow the ideology of Islahi Movement in Kerala ). K. M. Maulavi was the first president of KNM. The objectives of Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen are not different from the objectives of Islahi Movement in Kerala. Conveying the true message of Islam, which is based on monotheism, is considered to be the primary objective of the movement. It also works against social evils (like dowry system), superstitious beliefs, and all types of Bid\'ah. It promotes religious as well as modern education, and also undertake humanitarian activities. Kerala Nadvathul Myjahideen and affiliated bodies are against extremism in all its forms. Activities in the field of education Earlier, Muslim women were discouraged from acquiring any form of education by the conservatives. When Islahi Movement started its functioning as an organization, they have taken a stand that the education especially Muslim women’s education should be accorded greater importance. Islahi movement was the driving force behind setting up major educational institutions, and schools in Kerala in the early days, and they encouraged men and women to acquire modern education, and this helped transforming many places of the Malabar region into highly educated areas. Islahi movement has started modern Madrasa system in Kerala to cater to the religious educational needs of boys and girls, and formalized the religious education system. KNM do not normally run Madrassas directly, instead, local communities manage them, but academic matters are controlled by KNM’s board of education directly. Islahi Movement established a number of Arabic Colleges (some of them are affiliated to University of Calicut, and some of them to the University of Kannur) which offer B.A Afzal-ul-Ulema courses. A number of Arts and Science colleges, and technical and private colleges were also established later. Religious activities Islahi Movement propagates that the Muslims should stick to 'Tawheed' (monotheism) in its original form. It also urges the people to look at Qur'an and Hadith instead of simply following different Muslim schools of thought. For example, Islahi Movement says Triple talaq is not the one, which is sanctioned by Islam, but conservatives see no problem in Triple talaq. In the past, the Jumu'ah Khutba (Friday sermon) was in Arabic language everywhere in Kerala, which was a language not understood by the Keralite Muslims. The Islahi Movement started Juma Khutba (Friday sermon) in Malayalam for the first time in Kerala. The first full Qur'an translation with commentary was prepared in Malayalam by an Islahi scholar, Mohammed Amani Maulavi, and published by KNM, and the translation is widely known as Amani Moulavi’s tafsir. A soft version of the tafsir, the Noble Qur'an, is also now available on PC CD-ROM. In the past, women in Kerala were not allowed to pray in Masjids, but in Masjids managed by Islahi Movement, women were allowed and encouraged to pray in separate women's prayer section inside the mosque. The KNM started Learning Schools across Kerala in order to educate the Muslim society about the true religion. Social activities Bodies affiliated to KNM manage ambulance units, Pain and Palliative care centers, orphanages, Zakat funds, and other charity wings. KNM is actively involved in many other social activities. According to KNM, dowry system is un-Islamic, and it urges its members and well-wishers to keep away from it. A special wing of the KNM, BISMI, works against the dowry system. BISMI conducting dowry free group marriages freaquently to promot less expensive marriages. Inter-faith dialogue KNM has a policy of promoting religious tolerance. 'Niche of Truth' working under Islahi Movement for the interfaith dialogue. In the Persian Gulf, gulf chapters of the Niche of Truth operate under the Islahi centres in the respective countries. Political agenda Many leaders of Islahi Movement took active part in India’s freedom struggle, and other than that KNM or the movement in general has not shown any political ambitions, and it also doesn’t bar its members from joining any political parties except those who have a political ideology, which is against the principles followed by the movement. Feeding organaisations The various organizations under KNM are Kerala Jamhiyathul Ulama (KJU) This is the first Ulama (Religious Scholars) organization in Kerala. It is formed in the year of 1924 in a meeting held at Aluway under the leadership of K.M.Moulavi, M.C.C. Abdu Rahman Moulavi and E.K.Moulavi. It guides the Muslim Community in Kerala through the light of Holy QURAN and SUNNAH oh prophet Muhammad .It tries its best to eradicate superstitious belief and deeds prevailed among the Muslim Community in Kerala, and alert them against the greatest indulgence (Shirk) and Bidaa (new items added to Islam). (more……..) Ithihadu Shubbanul Mujahideen (ISM) It is the youth wing of Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen. In 1966, K.N.M. formed its youth wing named as Ithihadu Shubbanil Mujahideen (ISM), with a view to lead the youth of Kerala in the light of Quran. Currently ISM becomes the most active Islamic youth movement in kerala.Its works ranges from Islamic D'wa to humanitarian activities like free medical camps,campaigns against terrorism etc... The Salvation International exibition of ISM have helps to got more publicity to them... Mujahid Students’ Movement (MSM) MSM is the student wing of Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM), the islahi organization in Kerala. MSM was the necessity of the time. Because, population of Muslim students in the schools, colleges and universities increased multifold. Initially religious minded students were enrolled in ISM. The Students wing of ISM was known as ISM-SW. Later, a separate wing by name Mujahid Students Movement (MSM) was formed in 1971. MSM’s chief objective is to propagate Islamic ideals and principles among the student community in the campuses and schools. Students of medical, law, arts, science and engineering colleges imbibed the new energy emanated from the workers of MSM and actively participated in campus discussions and deliberations on Islam. These students in turn prevented a large number of students, Muslim and non-Muslim students from falling prey to the false beliefs, ideologies and doctrines. Muslim Girls & Women’s Movement (MGM) MGM, the ladies wing of KNM was organized in 1987. Thanks to the reformative activities of KNM through decades, Muslim women attained awareness about their rights and duties. Some of them came forward to learn Islam and propagate its values so as to enlighten them against superstitions and evil innovations prevailed the society. This situation necessitated a platform for co-ordination of their activities. At first the girls were organized behind the banner of MSM Girls’ Wing. Later enabling larger participation and convenient functioning, a separate ladies wing of KNM namely MGM was organized in 1987. MGM enjoin Muslim women to promote Islamic values among themselves. Study classes and family gatherings are arranged to impart Islamic knowledge. It has a special concern for charity activities like housing for poor and distribution of equipment for self employment. MGM upholds dignity of women and responds to any move of distortation towards it. Its identity is differentiated from among the modern feministic platforms by deliberate deviation to morality and its values. Board of Islamic Service and Missionary Information (BISMI) This wing of KNM is organized to assist the society with proper guidance and service in socio-cultural fronts, in accordance with the true teachings of Islam. There is no doubt, need for guidance in many a walks of life and a prioritized agenda should be maintained to meet with these needs.
